Prepare for potential NFIP lapse

With funding for the National Flood Insurance Program set to expire on Monday, Sept. 30, 2019, Congress has been scrambling to prevent a lapse. The House of Representatives voted to extend the NFIP through Nov. 21, 2019, as part of a continuing resolution to fund the government and avoid a shutdown. The Senate will consider the continuing resolution that would extend the NFIP and all government funding through Nov. 21. If the continuing resolution passes the Senate, then it will go to President Donald J. Trump to sign. The short extension of the NFIP allows Congress more time to negotiate NFIP reform that will include a long-term reauthorization. PIA has further information on how an NFIP lapse could impact your clients’ insurance policies. Additional information on the NFIP bills being considered is available PIA’s Flood Insurance Tool Kit.

PIA will continue to monitor this potential shutdown and apprise members of any new developments. If you have any additional questions, please contact PIA’s Industry Resource Center at resourcecenter@pia.org.
