The political wing of PIANJ strengthens your association’s credibility as a serious political force in New Jersey state elections.

John K. Tiene
Q. What is your insurance origin story?
I graduated college and instead of taking a "political" job, I answered an ad from an employment agency. I landed as a claims trainee at Allstate. Forty years later, I'm still doing insurance.
Q. What first sparked your interest in supporting the New Jersey PIAPAC and its causes?
I served as president of the Insurance Council of New Jersey, the trade association for insurance companies in New Jersey. I started the first political action committee for insurance company employees because it's extremely important for those in the insurance industry to be part of the conversation with those who create the laws and regulations that we—and our clients—have to live with. Insurance is one of the most regulated industries in the country and we need a voice because no one knows our business better than we do.
Q. In your opinion, what are the most important issues or policies the NJPIAPAC is helping to support?
We have to stand up to the trial bar and others that want to eat off the system. If we don't stop some of their aggressive initiatives, insurance will become unaffordable for small commercial-lines and personal-lines clients.
Q. If you could give one piece of advice to potential new donors considering supporting the NJPIAPAC, what would it be?
Don't complain if you're not supporting solutions. Without strong support for the NJPIAPAC, no agent should complain. Plus, supporting the NJPIAPAC allows you to talk intelligently to your clients. Your clients will appreciate that you're investing in your profession and protecting their interests.
Q. Lastly, can you give readers one book, movie, or show recommendation?
I would recommend The Snowball Warren Buffet and the Business of Life by Alice Schroeder.
