NFIP receives short-term reauthorization until Dec. 22

President Donald J. Trump has signed a two-week stopgap spending bill into law to keep the federal government operating until Dec. 22. This two-week extension keeps the National Flood Insurance Program fully operational until Dec. 22, 2017. This measure is the latest extension for the NFIP, as senators struggled to finalize plans for a long-term reauthorization and overhaul of the program.

If President Trump and the lawmakers can agree on a way forward over the next two weeks, one option would be to include an NFIP reauthorization in yet another short-term spending bill to keep the government open until sometime in January. Then Congress could try to negotiate the remaining details of a trillion-dollar spending plan for the rest of the fiscal year.

With Congress still undecided on the best way forward with a long-term NFIP reauthorization, it remains possible an NFIP extension would be included in a subsequent short-term extension of the federal funding measure. There also is a chance House Republicans will try to attach some flood reforms, such as a provision on private flood coverage, to any short-term extension of the NFIP.
