Legislation introduced to protect consumers from discrimination by motor vehicle insurers
Legislation was recently introduced (S.7372/A.6834) to prohibit motor vehicle insurers from discriminating based on education or occupation. The bill would protect consumers from discrimination based on education or occupation by prohibiting motor vehicle insurance companies from making any distinction or discrimination as to premiums, rates or in any other manner based solely on the education or occupation of the policy holder.
The bill passed the state Assembly last year and died in the Senate. The bill has been referred to the insurance committee in each house. The New York Public Interest Research Group published a report claiming that three of the top five motor vehicle insurers in the state considered education when setting premiums and two considered occupation.
