In Memoriam: PIANJ Past President, Robert F. Hughes Sr.

PIANJ is sad to report the death of PIANJ past President Robert F. Hughes Sr., on Aug. 14, in Longwood, Fla., where he lived for the past 20 years. He was 81 years old.

Bob operated the Rasmussen Agency Inc., in East Orange, N.J., before retiring and moving to Florida from Parsippany, N.J.  

He served on several PIANJ committees and on the board of directors before becoming an officer and president in 1987. In 1984, he was named PIANJ Director of the Year for his leadership and achievement as chair of the Legislative Committee. He also was involved in a number of important insurance industry efforts, including service on the New Jersey Insurance Task Force on Environmental Issues, the Underwriting Committee of the Municipal Market Assistance Program, and the New Jersey Department of Insurance Task Force on Banks and Insurance.

Raised in one of New Jersey’s most popular political families, he was a son of Richard J. Hughes, the only person to serve as the state’s Governor and as Chief Justice of the New Jersey State Supreme Court.

Predeceased by his wife Betty; a son Brian and two brothers; he is survived by his daughter Jennifer and son Robbie; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters and five other brothers, including Brian Hughes, who currently is County Executive of Mercer County in New Jersey.
