Core CISR Tri-State CE credit guide

New York: Each CISR is approved for 8 BR, C3, PC, PA credits, except for AO, which is approved for 8 LA, C1, LB, BR, C3, PC, PA credits. Earn 1 extra credit when you pass the optional exam.

New Jersey: Each CISR is approved for 8 GEN credits, except for AO, which is approved for 7 GEN and 1 ETH credits.

Attn. NJ Producers: According to the NJ DOBI, producers who maintain & fulfill the CE requirements for a professional insurance designation approved by the DOBI (CIC, CISR), shall be awarded 12 credit hours for each full year preceding renewal for which these requirements were fulfilled. Application to obtain such approval shall be made by using the CE1A form. Therefore, CICs and CISRs updating/maintaining their designations AUTOMATICALLY comply with the DOBI's CE requirements.

The CISR program is a CE credit-approved, nationally recognized designation program that takes a practical, hands-on approach to learning.

To earn the CISR designation, you must complete all five of the courses and exams within three calendar years following the year in which you successfully complete the first exam. However, anyone is welcome to attend the classes without taking the exams. There is a yearly designation update requirement.

About the CISR courses

Agency Operations—Learn the important functions of an independent agency. We will cover: How to develop professional relationships; An in-depth look at binding insurance, claims processing, certificates of insurance, renewals, cancellations & billing; and the legal aspects of what you do. Attendance at a CISR Agency Operations class may qualify you to earn an E&O premium credit. Check with your individual carrier.

Commercial Casualty—Uncover the building blocks of Commercial Casualty Insurance. We will cover: liability in the CGL policy; the differences between occurrence and claims-made claims; an overview of workers’ compensation insurance; an overview of the commercial auto policy; and important endorsements.

Commercial Property—The essentials of CP Insurance will be addressed. We will cover: an in-depth analysis of the coverage including buildings and contents; endorsements; and how the Commercial Lines Marine Policy compliments the Commercial Property Policy.

Personal Auto—Let’s analyze coverage in the Personal Auto Policy. We will cover liability, medical payments, uninsured motorists and physical damage coverage provided in the policy plus important endorsements.

Personal Residential—This class sheds new light on the details of the Homeowners' Policy. We will cover: a complete analysis of the HO Policy; a complete analysis of the HO2, HO3, HO6 and all major endorsements; compare and contrast the HO Policy with the Dwelling Fire Policy.

Hold Seminars are for all to attend. There is no longer a dues requirement or a designation requirement to attend a William T. Hold Seminar.

Attention NJ licensees: Producers who fulfill the CE requirements for a professional insurance designation approved by the NJDOBI (including CIC & CISR), shall be awarded 12 credit hours for each full year preceding renewal. Application to obtain such approval shall be made using the CE1A form and the alternative CE credit application. CICs and CISRs updating/maintaining their designations thereby fully comply with NJ's CE requirements, including the ETHICS requirement.

Who Should Attend?
Open to any employee of an agency, insurance company or insurance-related business, the five CISR courses are designed in a one-day format letting you gain all the benefits of this education opportunity with only one day out of the office. Plus, you earn state-mandated continuing education credits.

Earning and Maintaining the CISR Designation
To earn the CISR designation, you must complete all five of the courses and exams within three calendar years following the year in which you successfully complete the first exam. However, anyone is welcome to attend the classes without taking the exams. There is no special order in which courses must be taken. If you are more familiar with a given topic, you may want to begin with that course.

CISR designation updates: Once you have earned the CISR designation, you must take one “core” CISR program, Dynamics of Service or William T. Hold Seminar annually to maintain the designation. Want a new challenge? Move up to CIC! An entire CIC institute earns CISR designees two years of CISR update credit!

Once you have successfully passed all 5 exams and earned the CISR designation, you must take one CISR program annually to maintain the designation.The deadline falls on the month of your birthday, so plan on taking a CISR update before your deadline each year to ensure that you remain in good standing with the Society of CISR. As a non-CE method CISR update option, you may attend 8 consecutive hours of a CIC institute * (earns 1 year of update credit. NO CE credit granted for this option.)

Your annual continuing education update requirement after earning the CISR designation may be satisfied in one of four ways:

  • You may attend any one of the five standard CISR courses
    (no exam required).
  • You may attend one day of any Certified Insurance Counselor Institute ( 8 consecutive hours of a CIC institute * earns 1 year of update credit. NO CE credit granted for this option.)
  • You may attend any William T. Hold Seminar.
  • Full attendance of a Dynamics of Service Program. Topics vary from series to series as they apply to today's insurance market.

IMPORTANT: All participants must present photo identification to the registrar at the program location.
